hiking with dogs [Jun. 25th, 2007|01:33 pm]

Do most places in the state let you take dogs on the public hiking trails? If not, what are some dog-friendly hiking spots? it's been a looong time since I've gone hiking in Maine and I don't remember the rules at all.

State Park Rules

You may have to inquire locally as to the rules/regs on whatever trail you intend to hike. However, here is a link to the Rules for Pets in State Parks for Maine State Parks.

Basically, they need to be on a leash and you have to clean-up after them and they aren't allowed on any state beaches or at Sebago Lake State Park (probably 'cause it's one of the most crowded parks in the system).

Re: State Park Rules

I've met many friendly dogs and their owners on the trails in some of the state's parks. Bradbury Mountain State Park just northeast of Portland is a very popular one for dogs and their owners...or so it seemed the last time I went there a year back. Not a very difficult hike and provides a good view of that area of Maine from the summit.
